What do we have to do as English teachers?
As teachers of English as a Second Language, we do a lot of things, like…
- Design learning activities and student-friendly material
- Make input more comprehensible
- Provide opportunities for interaction and negotiation of meaning
- Help develop a variety of strategies
- Promote cultural awareness
- Manage some numeric data
- etc...
“Manage some numeric data.”
We need to…- Keep a clear record of my students’ grades
- Calculate the results of my 64 students giving different evaluations different weights (Ex.: 4 quizzes 15%, 2 tests 50%- each with a written component weighed 60% and an oral one given a 40%, 1 final exam 35%)
- Transform results from percentages to grades using a 1-7 scale
- Transform scores to grades using different grading scales
- Calculate percentages to deal with attendance
TASK:
- Get in groups of 4 and brainstorm more ideas (as many as possible!)
- Share your ideas on this blog
- Go over all the comments on the blog and think of solutions or resources that might help us solve these problems/ fulfill these needs.
- For example:
Answer 1: “You can use the Microsoft Office tool called Excel.”
Answer 2: “You can use the Internet to download a template.
- For example: here’s a website…”
- Try to answer at least 5 comments.
Example:“Keep a clear record of my students’ grades”

On this page we can find a software called Personal Digital Assistant.
EliminarThis helps you to Arm with a target grade calculator, students can now determine what grade is enough to reach a specified mark to eliminating a lot of guesswork.
So this can be useful for different classes.

ResponderEliminarIf we use as a teacher some social networks like facebook we can improve the relation between the teacher and the student,by using more didactic and dynamic data. As we all know facebook and twitter are very popular among students, the fact that we use it for teaching is always going to have positive effect.
ResponderEliminarFor example: We can apload some progress maps, so in that way our students are aware of their own development and progress.
With this we teach them in their own language.

Surely your ideas are very interesting, but we have to consider that some students do not have access to internet daily or they don`t have the necessary tools for working, as a computer, and follow their progress satisfactory.

The other day we have the same discution with miss carla chavez and we were agree that this days this kind of thechnology reaches all social classes. Maybe some students don't have computers at home but they can visit this social networks from cibers. If we face the reality we can notice that most of our students have access to this pages.
EliminarProblem "Calculate the results of my 64 students giving different evaluations different weights"
ResponderEliminarto solve this problem you can use excel with an advanced page, it means you have to put the correct formula in each blank according to the percentage you are consider in it.

Design learning activities and student-friendly materia
ResponderEliminarTeaching English within the classroom might be very difficult when students are not motivated. Therefore, it is very important to engage students to work in this process through several and varied activities like games, videos, music, role-play, etc. There is a good magazine which helps teachers to prepare good materials to use in class. "Teacher's Magazine"
Aldo Alvarado.
If we want to improve and use the new technologies during learning-teaching process. We ca use Glogster, Blogs, Prezi, Youtube and webquest.
ResponderEliminarProblem "Transform results from percentages to grades using a 1-7 scale"
ResponderEliminarI'm very old fashion to do this, I use a mathematic system called "regla de 3" it's very boring and time wasting but It's the way that I calculate grades since ever...
ex: if 70 is the higher grade it means that covers the 100% but a kid has a 50% the kid has a 3.5 grade...

the way you transform the values has a small error, because the percentage scale starts from zero and the 1-7 scale starts from one, to apply the "regla de 3" correctly, both scales need start from zero. You need to convert the 1-7 scale to 0-6 scale, and the final result add a unit to convert this result to the 1-7 scale
Eliminarex:
if 100 is a 6.0 (max percentage scale value vs max 0-6 scale value)
like 55 is a X ( in 0-6 scale value)
the value of x is:
X=(55*6.0)/100 => X = 3.3 (in 0-6 scale)
to convert this result to 1-7 scale, we need add 1 unit to X value
X = 3.3 + 1.0 => x = 4.3 (in 1-7 scale)
Greetings!
Sometimes the hours of English classes aren’t enough and students after each class remind with a lot of doubts which the most of the cases aren’t solved.
ResponderEliminarThe idea of this communication is to solve any doubts of the students related to the subject seen in classes through a face or blog account. The idea is they can express their doubts and at the same time receive an appropriate feedback from the teacher. If there are a large number of the students with the same doubt, the idea is that the teacher has to explain in the next class.
